Checklist

Before starting to determine the dimensions of the room and the placing of the various elements in relation to each other there are a number of important factors to be considered. When Pressalit Care advises on bathroom design we use the checklist below as one of our tools.

User

Is the user an adult or child, slim or solidly built, independent or dependent?

Is the user walking, sitting or lying?

Does the user need a walking stick, wheelchair or any other large mobility aid?

Is the disability the result of an accident, age or illness?

Is the situation stable or is the illness progressive?

How well does the user manage activities at the wash basin, the toilet and in the shower?

Has the user been rehabilitated?

Is the user right- or left-handed?

Would having moveable or adjustable products increase the user’s independence?

Carer

Has the fact that a user and carer require extra space been taken into account?

Is only one carer needed or many?

Which mobility aids and transfer methods are to be used?

What are the patterns of movement and working situations at the wash basin, toilet and shower?

Is the carer right- or left-handed?

Would having moveable or adjustable products improve the carer’s working conditions?

Room

Is the room to be used by one particular user or several different users?

Is the building a private home, institution, hospital, hotel or holiday centre?

Does there have to be room for mobility aids like a wheelchair, mobile hoist, ceiling hoist, etc?

Does the room fulfil the applicable legal regulations and norms for the design of bathrooms for the disabled?

Are there room or construction related restrictions like size and shape, equipment, soil pipes, columns, door placement, etc.?

Where is the bathroom located in relation to the bedroom and any other rooms?

Does the configuration of the functional bathroom respect the user and carer’s dignity?
